Harris Announces Her Presidential Bid
Vice President Kamala Harris has officially announced her campaign for the Democratic nomination. This comes after President Joe Biden decided not to seek re-election and endorsed her instead. Harris aims to make history as the first Black woman and first Asian American to lead a major political party ticket.
“I am honored to have the President’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination,” Harris stated. She emphasized her commitment to uniting the Democratic Party and the nation to defeat Donald Trump and his Project 2025 agenda.
Biden’s Historic Endorsement
President Biden’s endorsement of Harris came after his decision to drop his re-election bid. This followed weeks of pressure and a poor debate performance that raised doubts about his ability to win a second term.
“My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden announced. He praised his decision to choose Harris as his Vice President in 2020, calling it his best decision. Biden expressed his full support for Harris as the nominee.
Unprecedented Support from Black Women
Harris’s announcement received an overwhelming response from Black women across the country. Over 44,000 Black women joined a Zoom call organized by the Win With Black Women collective to show their support. They raised $1.5 million in just three hours. In a record-breaking effort, Harris’s campaign raised $50 million in a single day through grassroots donations.
Despite this massive support, the path to the nomination remains uncertain. The Democratic Party delegates at the national convention will decide the nominee. Some Democrats have called for an open nomination process, while others support Harris’s candidacy.
Democratic Party’s Next Steps
The Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison announced that the party would undertake a transparent and orderly process. The goal is to move forward as a united party with a candidate who can defeat Donald Trump in November.
On Sunday, the Biden-Harris campaign amended its filings with the Federal Election Commission, renaming its principal committee to “Harris for President.” This formalized Harris’s candidacy for the 2024 election.
Campaign Challenges Ahead
Control of the campaign war chest, totaling $95.9 million at the end of June, hinges on Harris remaining on the ticket. Polling shows her performing better against Trump than Biden and other potential Democratic contenders. However, there is still uncertainty about her path to the nomination.
Should there be efforts to pass over Harris in favor of candidates expected to run in 2028, it may cause backlash from her supporters and prominent Black Democrats. Nevertheless, Harris has received significant praise within her party since her announcement.
