Making History: Annette Addo-Yobo’s Victory

Annette Addo-Yobo has carved her name in history by winning the coveted title of Miss Texas 2024.

The prestigious beauty pageant, held at the Charles W. Eisemann Center for Performing Arts in Richardson, marked a significant milestone as Addo-Yobo became the first immigrant-born and the first Ghanaian woman to clinch this esteemed title. Competing under the banner of Miss Southlake, she stood out among her peers with grace and determination.

Born in Ghana and raised across Canada and the United States, Addo-Yobo pursued higher education at the University of Texas at Dallas, graduating with a psychology degree in 2020. Her journey to success was not without challenges, as she navigated limitations imposed by her citizenship status until obtaining U.S. citizenship in 2022.

Advocacy through Talent: Autism Awareness

During the Miss Texas 2024 competition, Addo-Yobo used her platform to advocate for autism awareness, a cause deeply personal to her. Her brother Andrew, diagnosed on the autism spectrum at a young age, inspired her commitment to this cause.

Through a poignant spoken word performance, she highlighted the importance of autism safety, awareness, and education. This advocacy is central to her initiative, The SPARK Project, aimed at addressing the needs and challenges faced by individuals with autism.

“I want to bring autism safety, awareness, and education to the frontlines of our programming and our legislation,” Addo-Yobo expressed passionately. Her dedication extends beyond the stage, as she actively engages in advocacy efforts, including lobbying for autism awareness on Capitol Hill.

The Road Ahead: Representing Texas and Beyond

With her victory, Addo-Yobo not only secures a $20,000 scholarship but also earns the opportunity to represent Texas on a national stage at the Miss America pageant. Her triumph resonates beyond the realm of beauty pageants, symbolizing resilience, diversity, and inclusivity.

Expressing her gratitude on social media, Addo-Yobo affirmed, “I am humbled, honored, and grateful to serve as your 87th Miss Texas.” Her journey exemplifies the empowerment of immigrant women and underscores the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity.

Embracing Diversity and Inspiring Change

Addo-Yobo’s win celebrates diversity within the Miss Texas pageant and serves as a beacon of hope for aspiring young women, especially immigrants and those advocating for marginalized communities.

Her crowning moment not only marks a personal achievement but also signifies a step towards a more inclusive future in beauty pageantry.
