Chidinma Modupe Okafor, a 30-year-old Lagos resident, has triumphed in a grueling 72-hour crochet marathon, setting a new Guinness World Record. Her remarkable feat involved creating a beautiful white dinner gown, surpassing the previous record of 34 hours and seven minutes set in 2021.
Since childhood, Okafor has been passionate about crocheting, mastering the art of creating clothes and accessories. Motivated by a lifelong love for the craft and a personal challenge to push her mental and physical limits, she embarked on this ambitious record attempt.
“I aimed to showcase the artistry and perseverance involved in crocheting and promote awareness about its benefits,” Okafor shared with Guinness World Records.
During the marathon, Okafor had to crochet continuously, transitioning from one ball of yarn to the next without pause. She adhered to strict rules allowing only two hours of break per day, with brief five-minute intervals per hour for necessities like eating and restroom breaks.
“My preparation involved rigorous training and mental conditioning, along with strategic planning to sustain my pace and minimize fatigue,” Okafor recounted. Logistics were crucial, ensuring ample yarn supply and support staff for uninterrupted progress.
Initially planning to crochet a wedding gown, Okafor adapted her design to a dinner gown due to exhaustion. Her determination mirrored that of fellow Nigerian Hilda Baci, inspiring her from Baci’s longest cooking marathon achievement the previous year.
