Breaking Barriers with AND1

Harlem Globetrotter Alexis Morris has made history by becoming the first female ambassador for basketball apparel and sneaker brand AND1. This partnership marks a significant milestone in her career and aims to empower women in sports and streetball. Morris, a 2023 NCAA champion, is set to inspire youth and break barriers in these fields.

Morris’s new role involves participating in community events and supporting initiatives that celebrate women in sports. The AND1 team believes her story aligns perfectly with the brand’s identity and will encourage young women to pursue basketball. “AND1 is a movement powered by Black people, Black culture, inner cities, and urban basketball,” Morris stated. “I am all of those things.”

A Homecoming for Morris

For Morris, this partnership feels like coming home. Growing up in Beaumont, Texas, with limited resources, she often had to fight for her place on the streetball court, which was dominated by boys. This background has given her a deep connection to the sport and street culture.

The deal also allows Morris to design her signature collection, empowering Black athletes and creators. “There is a continuous need for female representation in sports and especially street culture,” Morris emphasized. She believes street culture is the foundation of basketball, adding, “It’s the swag.”

Empowering Women Through Fashion

Morris plans to showcase a more androgynous style with her collection. “You don’t have to be the girliest of the girls to wear my collection,” she said. This inclusive approach aims to make everyone feel comfortable and stylish, regardless of their gender expression.

Additionally, Morris is exploring NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) deals under her brand with AND1 and is seeking the first female athlete to join her team. This initiative will further support women in sports and provide new opportunities for female athletes.

Looking Forward to the WNBA

Despite being cut during the 2023 preseason after being drafted by the Connecticut Sun, Morris remains hopeful about joining the WNBA. She made her professional debut as a Harlem Globetrotter in February 2024, showcasing her streetball skills on a global stage.

Playing in the WNBA would fulfill her childhood dream. Morris hopes the league will embrace street culture and the unique moves she has mastered as a Harlem Globetrotter. Her journey continues to inspire many, proving that persistence and passion can break down barriers.
