Tubi’s Meteoric Rise to Streaming Dominance

Tubi, the free video streaming platform, has achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the second-most watched streaming service in May, surpassing industry giants like Netflix and Disney+.

According to Nielsen data, the Fox-owned platform recorded an average audience of 1 million viewers, a staggering 46% increase from the previous year.

A Free Alternative Amidst Rising Subscription Costs

Tubi’s success can be attributed to its free, ad-supported model, which has proven to be a compelling alternative for budget-conscious consumers amid rising subscription costs from other streaming services. As Adam Levinson, Tubi’s chief content officer, stated, “Of course, those are things that are going to positively impact us.”

“Tubi continues to pull ahead from its (ad-supported video on demand) competition and post faster than expected growth,” analysts at research firm MoffettNathanson affirmed.

Championing Black Filmmakers and Diverse Voices

Tubi’s commitment to amplifying diverse voices and championing Black filmmakers has played a pivotal role in its meteoric rise. The platform has become a hub for Black content creators, hosting initiatives like Village Roadshow’s Black Noir Cinema, which produces Blaxploitation-style films.

Notably, Tubi has forged a partnership with Issa Rae’s ColorCreative production company to launch Stubio, a fan-fueled studio designed to empower aspiring Black filmmakers and connect them with their audiences. This initiative aligns with Tubi’s mission to foster representation and democratized storytelling.

“They have done a great job of seeing their audience, cultivating that audience, and now investing in that audience tenfold,” Rae praised. “Not only investing in the audience, but they’re investing in creators to make long-form work for that audience.”

Expanding Horizons with Original Content

Emboldened by its success, Tubi is poised to expand its horizons by venturing into original scripted content. Its first original series is set to launch this fall, further solidifying its position as a major player in the streaming landscape.
