A’ja Wilson Etches Her Name in WNBA History Books
A’ja Wilson, the 27-year-old phenom from the Las Vegas Aces, etched her name in the WNBA history books with a scintillating performance against the Dallas Wings on Wednesday night. Wilson became the first player ever to record at least 35 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 steals in a single game. Her final stat line of 36 points, 14 rebounds, and 6 steals propelled the Aces to a 95-81 victory over the Wings.
Kelsey Plum, Wilson’s teammate, summed up her performance:
“And then her game. Do we have to pound that point? I mean, she’s the best in the world.”
Wilson’s Dominance Fuels Aces’ Victory
The Aces raced to an early lead, thanks to Wilson’s hot start. She scored 12 of her team’s opening 20 points, helping them establish a 22-6 advantage. Although the Wings closed the gap to 47-42 at halftime, Las Vegas snuffed out any possibility of a comeback in the third quarter. Jackie Young’s back-to-back three-pointers extended the Aces’ lead to 63-52, and they never looked back.
Wilson’s performance wasn’t just historic; it was also physical. The game left her face bloodied when she was hit multiple times while driving to the hoop. However, she refused to back down, apologizing for her actions towards an official “in the heat of the moment.”
Aces’ Newcomer Tiffany Hayes Shines
Tiffany Hayes, the Aces’ latest addition, made her presence felt, scoring 11 points in her debut for the team. Hayes, who started all 40 games for the Connecticut Sun last season, joined the Aces on Friday and wasted no time in making an impact.
Despite the loss, Arike Ogunbowale shone for the Wings, leading all scorers with 31 points. Teaira McCowan and Maddy Siegrist chipped in with 14 points apiece, but their efforts weren’t enough to overcome Wilson’s historic performance.
