Tennis Icon Honored with Her Own Barbie Doll

Venus Williams, the legendary tennis player, has been immortalized as a Barbie doll. This honor comes as part of Mattel’s campaign to celebrate Barbie’s 65th anniversary by recognizing nine female athletes worldwide.

The new doll depicts Williams in action on a tennis court, wearing a white dress, visor, and her signature gold hoop earrings.

“Throughout my career, I’ve always been driven by the idea of shattering glass ceilings and staying true to myself, and Barbie’s mission couldn’t resonate more deeply with that ethos,” Williams said. “I’m honored to be recognized as a sports role model and join forces with Team Barbie to continue empowering the next generation of young girls to never stop believing in their dreams.”

Inspiring Young Girls Through Sports Role Models

The special edition role model dolls aim to encourage girls to stay active in sports. Alongside Williams, other athletes honored include soccer star Mary Fowler (Australia), Olympic champion boxer Estelle Mossely (France), and gymnasts Alexa Moreno (Mexico) and Rebeca Andrade (Brazil).

Krista Berger, Senior Vice President of Barbie and Global Head of Dolls at Mattel, expressed excitement about the campaign. “The sports one-of-a-kind role model dolls serve as an embodiment of our shared values of passion, empowerment and individuality,” she stated.

“By shining a light on these inspirational athletes and their stories, we hope to champion the belief that every young girl deserves the opportunity to pursue her passions and turn her dreams into reality.”

Continuing the 65th Anniversary Celebrations

Last month, Mattel welcomed Olympic figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi into the Barbie family. Her doll paid tribute to her iconic performance at the 1992 Albertville Olympics. The release of these athlete dolls further fuels the momentum surrounding women in sports as Barbie marks its 65th anniversary.

Williams expressed her deep pride and gratitude upon receiving the honor. “I’m humbled to be recognized as a sports role model and to be part of Team Barbie,” she shared.

“Together, we can inspire the next generation of young girls to chase their dreams relentlessly.” With this initiative, Barbie aims to foster self-confidence, ambition, and empowerment among young girls worldwide.
