As Mental Health Awareness Month unfolds, “I Love Me More Period.” Podcast emerges as a beacon of hope and healing, capturing the hearts and minds of listeners worldwide. Created by esteemed motivational speaker, author, community activist, and academic professional Dr. Jamila T. Davis, alongside empowerment expert Tara Wallace, this transformative podcast offers a roadmap to self-discovery, resilience, and self-love, particularly for Black women.
Dr. Jamila T. Davis’s journey is one of resilience and redemption. Rising to self-made, multi-millionaire status at the young age of 25, Dr. Davis’s life took an unexpected turn when she was sentenced to 12 1/2 years for bank fraud in 2008. Despite facing adversity, Dr. Davis used her time behind bars wisely.
While incarcerated she received several degrees and diligently documented her journey, developing a groundbreaking self-help curriculum called “The Voices of Consequences Enrichment Series,” specifically designed to empower incarcerated women. Her dedication to empowering others led to the adoption of this program by the Bureau of Prisons as an approved program for time credit for incarcerated women through the First Step Act.
In collaboration with Tara Wallace, former reality show star of Love & Hip Hop, Dr. Davis met Wallace back in 2019, two years after her release from prison, when they started doing healing circles for women at the Shani Baraka Center in Newark, NJ. Their program, Rise Up, was designed for victims of domestic violence, providing a safe space for healing and empowerment.
By sharing their stories publicly with the women in the group, healing began to occur, and what was initially supposed to be an 8-week program lasted over a year during the pandemic. It served as an outlet for many of these women to receive therapy and heal from trauma. Additionally, Davis utilized the research from the program to complete her dissertation for her PhD.
Inspired by their experiences and the profound impact of their work, Dr. Davis and Tara Wallace co-authored the best-selling book “I Love Me More: The 8 Steps to Breaking Free From Toxic Relationships.” Their podcast, “I Love Me More. Period.,” is based on the principles outlined in their book. With rocketing views and downloads, coupled with relatable stories and expert advice, the podcast has quickly become a must-listen for Black women and girls seeking guidance and support on their journey towards self-love and healing.
