Tennis Legend Makes History as Solo Host

Serena Williams, regarded as one of the greatest tennis players ever, is set to host the 2024 ESPYS. The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion will become the fourth woman and second solo female host of the prestigious sports awards show.

In a statement, Williams expressed her excitement, calling it “a dream come true” and something she has wanted for as long as she can remember.

“I couldn’t be more excited to host The ESPYS,” Williams said. “This is a dream come true for me, and something I’ve wanted to do for as long as I can remember. It has been a sensational year for sports and an unprecedented one for female athletes…I can’t wait to celebrate everyone on-stage in July.”

Trailblazer On and Off the Court

Beyond her unparalleled tennis achievements, Williams has been a passionate advocate for gender equality in sports. She has used her platform to promote social causes, including Black maternal health advocacy and racial equality.

Moreover, Williams is a successful entrepreneur, having established her venture capital firm, Serena Ventures, in 2017, focusing on investing in women and founders of color.

Williams’ hosting gig at the ESPYs coincides with the July 10 premiere of the ESPN+ Original Series, “In the Arena: Serena Williams.” This 8-part series provides an inside look at her legendary career, featuring firsthand perspectives from Williams and key figures throughout her life.

Additionally, in April 2023, she introduced her multimedia production company, Nine Two Six Productions, aiming to elevate female and diverse voices through content.

A Trailblazer’s Legacy

With 12 ESPY awards herself, Williams follows in the footsteps of Danica Patrick, who became the first woman to host the show in 2018, and Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird, who co-hosted the virtual 2020 event with Russell Wilson during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2024 ESPYS, presented by Capital One, will air live on ABC from The Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Thursday, July 11, at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
