In a momentous occasion, the late Dr. Patricia Bath, a pioneering ophthalmologist and inventor, was posthumously inducted into the prestigious National Women’s Hall of Fame. This honor not only recognizes her remarkable achievements but also celebrates the enduring legacy she has left behind.

A Daughter’s Perspective: Dr. Eraka Bath Reflects

Dr. Eraka Bath, the daughter of the esteemed Dr. Patricia Bath, graciously accepted the honor on her mother’s behalf. In an exclusive interview with ESSENCE, she shared insights into their intimate relationship and how her mother’s impact continues to shape her own life and career.

“I grew up as an only child with a single mom, so it was almost like she and I were against the world. Given that I am a single mother, I realized more about the importance of that dyadic relationship. The bond, connection, and responsibility are incredible.”

Nurturing a Legacy of Service

Dr. Eraka Bath acknowledged the profound influence her mother had on her decision to pursue a medical career. From a young age, she witnessed the importance of service and giving back, values instilled by her mother’s unwavering dedication to her profession and community.

“My mom never said I had to be a doctor, but exposure to service as a way of life helped me understand what was necessary. I always recognized the importance of giving back; that was one of the values she imparted to me.”

Championing STEM and Eradicating Health Inequities

Inspired by her mother’s mentorship of countless doctors from diverse backgrounds, Dr. Eraka Bath continues to champion STEM work and advocate for health equity.

Through her appointment at UCLA’s Department of Psychiatry, she focuses on eradicating health inequities by addressing workforce development, inclusive research protocols, and accommodating structures.

Preserving a Legacy: Collaboration and Representation

Dr. Eraka Bath expressed her gratitude for the recognition bestowed upon her mother and acknowledged the collective efforts to preserve her legacy. She highlighted the support of her mother’s sorority sisters from Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority Incorporated, and close friends who champion her mother’s story and the importance of representation.

“I am blessed and thankful to have other champions because I couldn’t do it alone as a lot as an only child. I’m very committed to doing as much as possible, but I have close friends of my mother’s who want her to have her flowers.”

A Spirit of Bravery

When asked to describe her mother’s spirit in one word, Dr. Eraka Bath’s response was resolute: “Brave.” This sentiment encapsulates the unwavering courage and determination that propelled Dr. Patricia Bath to shatter glass ceilings and pave the way for future generations.

Through her daughter’s poignant reflections, Dr. Patricia Bath’s legacy shines brightly, inspiring women in STEM, advocating for health equity, and demonstrating the power of resilience and service to the community.
