The Multifaceted Life of Nicole Ari Parker

To longtime fans, she’s Teri Joseph, while newer audiences know her as Lisa Todd Wexley. But at home, Nicole Ari Parker is simply known as “mom” – a role she cherishes as much as her acclaimed acting career spanning film, television, and stage.

As a renowned actress with decades of experience, Parker has mastered the art of balancing the demands of her professional life with the joys and challenges of motherhood. In an exclusive interview, she reveals the strategies she employs to maintain her well-being and find pockets of self-care amidst the bustling schedules.

Redefining Self-Care Through the Lens of Parenthood

For Parker, the concept of self-care has evolved since becoming a parent. “I think any mom will tell you the different phases of their children’s lives, self-care is secondary especially when they’re little,” she says. “And my kids are teenagers now, so I have a little more time for makeup.”

However, Parker acknowledges that self-care isn’t always about pampering; it’s about finding the right tools to nurture one’s mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

“I also think that self-care changes when you become a parent and it’s not always pampering, it’s sometimes just rest, meditation, prayer, those kinds of things you need in your toolbox. And they become a luxury too.”

Instilling Valuable Lessons in Her Children

As a self-described “disciplinarian” and “strict mom,” Parker has placed a strong emphasis on imparting valuable life lessons to her children, Sophie and Nicholas. When her daughter left for Howard University last fall, Parker made sure to share her wisdom.

“I really tried to instill getting your work done, making your bed and all of the basics that my mom gave me,” she explains. “But I really knew as a young woman that I wanted her to have self-care in her life and to carve out that time in the morning before class and get yourself together, get the kind of shower you want, the lotion you want, make your bed, feel good about yourself, begin the day loving yourself.”

Merging Entrepreneurship and Self-Care

Parker’s entrepreneurial journey is as inspiring as her acting career. In 2012, she founded The Gymwrap, a groundbreaking gym wrap brand designed to protect women’s hairstyles during workouts.

Motivated by her own experiences and the challenges faced by women with textured hair, Parker’s innovation combined style, functionality, and a deep understanding of self-care needs.

Now, Parker has partnered with Jergens® Skincare to celebrate the brand’s new Mother’s Day Campaign, “Mom-Sense.” Through this collaboration, she has co-created a unique, limited-edition bracelet infused with the cherished essence of Jergens’ Cherry Almond fragrance, further bridging the gap between self-care and the joys of motherhood.

Maintaining Balance and Fulfillment

As Nicole Ari Parker navigates the demands of her illustrious acting career and the rewarding role of motherhood, her journey serves as a testament to the power of finding balance and prioritizing well-being.

By redefining self-care through the lens of parenthood and seamlessly integrating her entrepreneurial endeavors, Parker has demonstrated that it is possible to thrive in the multifaceted roles of a modern woman.

Her story reminds us that self-care is not a luxury, but a vital necessity for maintaining balance and fulfillment in our lives – a lesson that resonates deeply, especially during this Mother’s Day season.
