A Labor of Love: Tatyana Ali’s New Quilt Line for Babies

Actress and singer Tatyana Ali has added another impressive feat to her resume – launching a new line of baby quilts, titled “Baby Yams.” The limited edition collection, unveiled during Black Maternal Health Week, showcases Ali’s creative talents and her passion for supporting Black mothers.

Ali, best known for her role on the hit sitcom “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” shared her inspiring journey into the world of sewing and quilting.

While expecting her second child, the actress discovered a newfound love for crafting and handmaking items for her nursery. This experience prompted her to share her creations with others, leading to the birth of the “Baby Yams” line.

Honoring Black Maternal Health Week with Heartfelt Designs

In her announcement on Instagram, Ali expressed her excitement about the new venture, writing, “Happy Black Maternal Health Week! I have a couple of announcements to make this week that I’m so excited about! I love to express my creativity in many ways, but I bet you didn’t know that I can sew!”

The “Baby Yams” quilts feature vibrant Ankara fabric designs from Ghana, which Ali personally curated. She shared that the inspiration for the line came from the positive feedback she received on a quilt she had made for her own child.

Giving Back to the Reproductive Justice Community

But Ali’s passion for this project goes beyond just creating beautiful and unique quilts. She has pledged to donate all proceeds from the “Baby Yams” line to support “birth workers uniquely positioned to give our families the care we need.”

This decision was influenced by Ali’s own experience in finding a midwife for her first pregnancy through the Reproductive Justice Community.

“While expecting my youngest son, I made him a quilt with Ankara Fabric and got so many compliments on it that I thought others would like it as well,” Ali shared. “I found answers. I found power. And, I want to share this feeling with other parents.”

Empowering Black Mothers and Celebrating Creativity

The launch of the “Baby Yams” quilt line coincides with Ali’s recent work as the host of Make Springhill’s chat around Black Maternal Health.

Through this platform, she has had candid discussions with fellow celebrities like Kyla Pratt and Melanie Fiona, addressing the challenges Black mothers face in healthcare and the urgent need for change.
