Baby Dove’s ‘Expected Care’ Campaign Spotlights Black Birth Equity
In a bold move to address the alarming maternal health crisis disproportionately impacting Black women, leading baby care brand Baby Dove has launched its ‘Expected Care’ campaign.
This initiative aims to raise awareness and provide critical support to Black expectant mothers through its ongoing Black Birth Equity Fund.
The ‘Expected Care’ campaign features the powerful stories of five Black Birth Equity Fund grant recipients, Ronique, Jazzmine, Kendra, Matilda, and Jasmine, captured through the lens of photographer Solana Cain.
These women’s experiences, shared across Baby Dove’s social media platforms, shed light on the unique challenges faced by Black mothers during pregnancy and childbirth.
Addressing the Maternal Health Crisis
Baby Dove’s commitment to improving Black maternal health outcomes stems from sobering statistics. Black women are 3-5 times more likely to die of pregnancy-related causes than their white counterparts, and a staggering 60% of these deaths are preventable.
“The goal of Baby Dove’s Black Birth Equity Fund has always been to improve the birthing journey for Black moms and their babies,” said Greg Ross, Chief Operating Officer of North America Personal Care at Unilever.
“As we enter Black Maternal Health Week 2024, Baby Dove is proud to uplift the stories of our grant recipients with our Expecting Care project while reinforcing our commitment to providing affordable, accessible, and high-quality care for Black moms.”
Empowering Black Mothers Through Doula Support
At the heart of the ‘Expected Care’ campaign is Baby Dove’s recognition of the vital role doulas play in supporting Black mothers throughout their pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experiences. Research has shown that pregnant women are more likely to experience positive health outcomes when they receive doula care.
Since the launch of its Black Birth Equity Fund in 2021, Baby Dove has provided over $650,000 in funding to help Black mothers access doula services.
More than 500 women have benefited from this initiative, which aims to bridge the gap in maternal care and improve health outcomes for this underserved population.
Expanding Access to Essential Resources
In addition to the Black Birth Equity Fund, Baby Dove has taken further steps to empower Black mothers. In 2023, the brand partnered with Sista Midwife Productions, a birth advocacy consulting agency, to launch the Black Doula Directory.
This comprehensive directory features over 1,400 birthing professionals across the United States, Canada, Australia, England, and Germany.
