A Fashionable Renaissance Woman
Andrea Dumebi Iyamah is one of the most inspiring fashion designers in the industry. With a career spanning over a decade, she leads a wave of designers creating womenswear that exudes immense feminine power and makes bold sartorial statements transcending style and elegance. Her eponymous fashion brand, Andrea Iyamah, was founded out of a need for authentic African representation.
“I remember going to one of the high-end department stores with my mother and wondering why African brands weren’t represented,” Iyamah wrote in an email. “I would say this experience was seeded with the goal of creating an African heritage brand that would be available in various retail outlets around the world.”
An Entrepreneurial Journey
Iyamah’s fashion journey began at 17 while studying in Canada. She started with a swimwear brand, working in a tiny studio with a small team handling everything from marketing to shipping.
However, social media’s advent ushered in expansion and opportunity, propelling the brand into ready-to-wear and bridal fashion, with flagship locations in Lagos and New York.
Nurturing a Passion
Growing up in Nigeria, Iyamah developed a love for fashion, nurtured by her mother’s influence. Despite her parents preferring a conventional vocational path, Iyamah harbored a burning desire for fashion.
Her mother recognized this passion and arranged for her to work with a local tailor during summer holidays, where she learned sewing and garment construction intricacies.
“I did it from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. I learned to sew on hand machines. I learned everything from sewing children’s clothes to cutting patterns before moving on to adult clothes. It was a great learning experience and really equipped me with the basics to get started,” she recalls.
Exquisite Designs, Empowering Women
Andrea Iyamah’s design aesthetic is filled with warmth and intricate fluidity; each design is driven by splendid elegance and sensuality. The designer wants every woman to feel powerful in her creations.
“It is extremely intentional that we make women feel first and then see,” Iyamah said. “Everything in my life is about feeling good before it looks good – for it to be good, it needs to be consistent with your values, the way you want to be addressed, the way you address yourself and offer you a sense of identity.”
Iyamah weaponizes colors, textures, shapes, and movement to complete this effect. Sculptural techniques are evident, like in the Sombra bodysuit, exhibiting intense fierceness through waves, curves, and movement.
A Fashion Empire in the Making
Andrea Iyamah is a spirited entrepreneur, building a fashion empire from swimwear to ready-to-wear, bridal, and shoes. She has expanded into design and hospitality, creating the “Andrea Iyamah Living.” More expansion is planned for the near future.
“At Andrea Iyamah, we have always believed that once we understand the value and essence of a brand, we can leverage it in everything,” she said. “We imagine a world where there are resorts, hotels, Andrea Iyamah festivals, whatever it is.”
A Sisterhood Through Fashion
Ultimately, Andrea Iyamah finds fulfillment in the sisterhood she has created through fashion, one of her brand’s most charming aspects.
“I sometimes go on holiday and always smile when I see women in our creations. You know, it’s one thing to design these pieces, and it’s another thing to see it being accepted by women all over the world. This allows you to continue to be inspired and see opportunities for further development,” said ESSENCE.
Andrea Iyamah is redefining feminine elegance through exquisite womenswear, empowering women worldwide with her designs and entrepreneurial spirit.
