Philadelphia Native Achieves Major Milestone
Quinta Brunson, renowned for her Emmy-winning work as the creator, producer, writer, and star of the acclaimed series “Abbott Elementary,” is poised to receive a significant accolade from her alma mater, Temple University.
The university announced that Brunson, hailing from Philadelphia, will be bestowed with an honorary degree during its 137th Commencement ceremony on May 8, 2024.
Temple President Richard M. Englert expressed profound enthusiasm, stating, “We are thrilled to recognize Quinta Brunson for her remarkable achievements and unwavering dedication to her craft.

Trailblazing Career Achievements
Brunson’s journey to stardom has been punctuated by groundbreaking milestones.
Notably, she made history as the first Black woman to secure three Emmy nominations and the second Black woman to clinch an Emmy in the category of Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for her stellar work on “Abbott Elementary.”
The series chronicles the lives of dedicated educators in a Philadelphia public school, showcasing their relentless efforts to uplift their students against formidable odds.
Honoring a Media Luminary
In recognition of her exemplary contributions to the media landscape, Brunson will also be feted with the 2024 Lew Klein Excellence in the Media Award by Temple University’s Klein College of Media and Communication.

Brunson’s transformative journey traces back to her formative years at Temple University’s Klein College. As a freshman, she became an integral part of Temple University Television’s (TUTV) inaugural student-produced comedy variety show, “Temple Smash,” before embarking on her pursuit of dreams in Southern California.
Beyond her remarkable creative accomplishments, Brunson has emerged as a prominent advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion within the entertainment industry. Leveraging her platform, she has championed authentic storytelling and relatable humor, resonating deeply with audiences worldwide and garnering widespread acclaim and recognition.
