From Nursing to the Music Industry: An Unconventional Journey

Jess Ogunjemilusi, known professionally as Jess OG, is a trailblazer in the music industry. Her journey began with a passion for hip-hop and rap, cultivated during her high school days when she would sneak off to concerts.

This love for music eventually led her to make a drastic career shift from nursing to the entertainment world.

“I can walk into that room with the other men who know who I am, and I will still be in that room,” Jess shared in an exclusive interview with Forbes. “They will introduce themselves to everyone but me.”

Asserting Authority in a Male-Dominated Space

In an industry often dominated by men, Jess faced the challenge of having to assert her authority and demand respect. However, her determination and unwavering work ethic allowed her to prove her worth, eventually securing positions like artist manager, budget overseer, and director roles.

“If I do not assert myself in this room, I will not be respected. If I’m not respected, my opinion will not be valid. If my opinion is not valued, I am used in the situation,” Jess explained.

A Diverse Range of Experience

Before securing her current role as the Director of Marketing at Sony label Santa Anna Records, Jess acquired a wealth of experience.

She held positions ranging from A&R intern to project manager intern to studio intern at Cinematic Records, effectively utilizing these opportunities to gain strategic insights and reach her goals.

Surpassing Expectations and Continual Learning

In the fast-paced entertainment industry, exceeding standard performance and continually learning are expected to stand out.

Jess embodied this approach, going beyond the norm to secure significant opportunities for growth and success while playing her part in shaping the music industry for the better.
