Navigating a Profound Identity Shift

At the age of 37, Dreka Gates found herself in the midst of a profound identity crisis after spending nearly two decades managing her husband Kevin Gates’s successful music career.

“I had a complete crisis of my identity,” she confesses to ESSENCE. “That shit is probably the hardest thing I’ve had to navigate in my entire life.”

“And I kind of almost want to cry now because it’s 17 years of being this person, and then looking up and realizing I am no longer her. That’s not my identity anymore. And that was my entire career,” she stressed. “Working through that was extremely difficult.”

Seeking Self-Discovery and Realignment

Faced with this pivotal realization, Dreka took immediate action to rediscover herself and realign her priorities. “I needed to find me again,” she shares. This journey of self-discovery was not an easy one, as her personal and professional lives had been intrinsically intertwined for so long.

“I was forced to ask myself some real questions because two sides of my life were wrapped in one,” she explains. “I had no choice but to find out who am I really? What do I desire? What do I want out of life? Who do I want to be? I had to figure it out.”

Embracing Holistic Wellness and Entrepreneurship

In her quest for growth, Dreka turned to a spiritual psychologist to help enrich her mind, body, and spirit. This pivotal step allowed her to tap into her holistic roots and launch her wellness and lifestyle company, DREKA, offering skincare, body products, and homeware.

Additionally, she founded BE Provisions, a cannabis brand with a team of over 30 employees, and acquired a 43-acre blueberry farm in 2020, where she could immerse herself in gardening and tending to the land – an experience she found deeply fulfilling.

Finding Peace and Living Her Best Life

“I’m over here literally living my best life,” Dreka declares with a smile. “Yes, I did go through a tough time, but I came up out of that, and I’m literally over here living my best life. Sometimes it takes choosing yourself, really tuning in, letting go of everything and realizing others’ actions have nothing to do with me. That’s what it took, and I’m so glad I did it.”

Through her journey of self-discovery and embracing new ventures aligned with her passions, Dreka Gates has emerged from her identity crisis with a renewed sense of peace and purpose, serving as an inspiration for others navigating similar transitions.
