A Groundbreaking Collaboration for Inclusivity
In a landmark move for the fragrance industry, November Nichols, the African American founder and CEO of the black-owned fragrance brand Chemin, has joined forces with retail giant JCPenney to launch an affordable luxury collection.
This collaboration aims to bring Chemin’s exquisite array of gender-neutral perfumes and body products to a broader audience, ensuring that luxury fragrance is accessible to everyone.
“As an indie fragrance house founded, owned, and operated by a black woman, this is a huge deal — as this is the first time a major retailer has gotten behind a black-owned fragrance brand in this way.”
Expanding Reach and Accessibility
The rollout of the Chemin x JCPenney collection will span over 50 store locations across 13 states, including Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Texas, and Utah. Additionally, the collection will be available for purchase on JCPenney’s online platform, further expanding its reach.
“With the collaboration (which will have the same scent and impact as CHEMIN Luxury’s collection), both CHEMIN and JC Penney want the fragrance brand ‘in the hands of everyone.'”
A Celebration of Uniqueness and Quality
The Chemin x JCPenney collection promises to deliver the same exceptional quality and sensory experiences that have made Chemin a beloved luxury brand.
The lineup includes a range of fragrances, such as Parfum 1 (Lemongrass, White Tea, Sandalwood), Parfum 17 (Bamboo, Citrus, Vetiver), Parfum 37 (Jasmine, Pomelo, Oud), Parfum 77 (Santal et Vanille), and Parfum 87 (Leather, Oud, Tobacco). Complementing the fragrances are a variety of body products, including body butters, crystal-infused body oils, Vitamin E sugar scrubs, charcoal scrubs, and lotions.
Fostering Diversity and Empowerment
Nichols’ mission extends beyond creating luxurious fragrances. As one of the few black women in the fragrance industry and the sole black brand with its own fragrance house, she is committed to empowering artisans and increasing diversity within the sector.
“Our demand for perfume is strong, but those who want to go from consumer to creator face a challenging path due to a lack of access to education (traditional perfumers typically study in France), capital, and mentorship.”
Through initiatives like the “Chemin Custom Fragrance Experience” and her WHITE LABEL program, Nichols aims to provide mentorship and education, enabling more minorities and women to break into the fragrance industry and create their own unique scents.
A Lucrative Industry with Vast Potential
The fragrance industry is a lucrative and rapidly growing market, projected to generate $61.79 billion in 2023 and upwards of $84.02 billion by 2028.
With a diverse customer base that includes 23% of black people and 85% of Hispanics and blacks as fragrance customers, the partnership between Chemin and JCPenney is poised to tap into a significant and underserved market.
