Queens, we need your help spreading the word about some unsettling news coming out of Atlanta!

Starting next week, children that attend schools in Decatur, GA who have unpaid meal charges will be subject to eating cheese sandwiches with milk to drink until their accounts come current. They will not be allowed to eat hot meals

City Schools of Decatur currently has a collective balance of $88,000 which accrued during the height of the Covid pandemic. Students who qualified were set to receive free meals through the 2023-2024 school year due to a surplus in COVID funding.

However, last year, State Representative of District 86 #ImaniBarnes ( @Imani4GA ) had introduced HB510 or the “Healthy Start” bill which aimed “to provide for breakfast and lunch programs for all public school students in this state” as well as “to provide for such meals to be offered at no cost to students who qualify for reduced price meals under federal and state guidelines.”

Legislation is still pending on the bill, which means that these families will once again have to resume paying for school meals beginning February 2nd; $0.30 for breakfast and $0.40 for lunch. There will be no change for families who qualify for free meals.

Georgia state representatives and residents are meeting tomorrow to urge lawmakers to pass HB510 and provide more relief for Georgia families.

If you are in Georgia, the assembly is at 10 AM at the state capital! #BWLM💕
