The family of former U.S. Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson is gearing up to file a lawsuit against Baylor Scott & White Institute for Rehabilitation for medical negligence, which, they say, contributed to Johnson’s death.
Johnson passed away on December 31 after suffering from an infection in her spine that developed after she had back surgery. She was allegedly left in her own urine and feces and the family’s attorney says that this was her cause of death.
Her son, Kirk Johnson, actually found his mother lying in her bodily excrements her just 3 months prior to her death.
“Deplorable,” he said. “She was being unattended to. She was screaming out in pain and for help.”
Per @APNews:
“The news release said that when Kirk Johnson couldn’t find any nurses on the floor, he went to the administration office and the CEO accompanied him to his mother’s room. When they arrived, staff members were cleaning up the feces.”
What makes this so heartbreaking is that Johnson was the country’s first nurse to serve in Congress. She was also the first Black chief psychiatric nurse at Dallas’ Veterans Affairs hospital, became the first Black woman to chair the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, and she also led the Congressional Black Caucus.
Johnson will be missed and we hope her family runs up a bag in her honor! They should on the hospital by the time they’re through with them. 💅🏽 #BWLM💕
