Back in July, Harvard named Claudine Gay as their first Black president and second woman after she served as the dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.
Sadly, she resigned from her position today amid plagiarism allegations. The Washington Free Beacon had recently accused Gay of plagiarizing another professor’s work in a paper that she wrote 20 years ago. Unfortunately, that’s not all Gay has been attacked for in recent months.
Just over a month ago, Gay and other university presidents were called to a congressional hearing where they were asked whether calls for genocide against Jews in the wake of the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza violated their schools’ codes of conduct.
Gay answered: “It can be, depending on the context,” but many felt that her answer should have been a plain “Yes.” While she received support from her fellow University presidents, Gay was highly criticized for her response by political spectators, namely New York Representative Elise Stefanik who grilled her during the hearing, and it did not help the plagiarism allegations that were brought against her as a newly appointed president of an Ivy League school.
It appears as though Gay’s resignation is a “checkmate” for Republicans who aim to do away with diversity and inclusion across colleges and universities in the United States.
We wish Claudine the best in her future endeavors. #BWLM💕
