Following the death of Senator Dianne Feinstein last week, Laphonza Butler has been sworn in in her place and has made history in doing so!
VP Kamala Harris swore in Butler (D) as California’s new senator, making her the 3rd Black woman and 4th ever to serve. Butler is also the first Black lesbian to serve in the United States Senate.
“From her time as President of EMILY’s List to leading the state’s largest labor union, she has always stood up for what is right and has led with her heart and her values,” Governor Gavin Newsom tweeted on Tuesday.”
“I have no doubt she will carry the baton left by Senator Feinstein, continue to break glass ceilings, and fight for all Californians in Washington.” Newsom also declared that he believes she will continue to make history ✊🏾
Butler is currently the only Black woman in the Senate, so let’s send her some good vibes on her new job.
