In 2025, the United States Mint will honor two remarkable Black women, Ida B. Wells and Althea Gibson, by featuring their images on newly minted quarters.

Ida B. Wells, a pioneering journalist, suffragist, and civil rights activist, played a pivotal role in the fight against racial injustice and lynching in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Her fearless advocacy and writings inspired generations to stand up against discrimination and inequality.

Althea Gibson, on the other hand, was a trailblazing athlete who broke barriers in the world of tennis. In the 1950s, she became the first African American player to compete at the U.S. National Championships (now the U.S. Open) and Wimbledon, shattering racial segregation in the sport. Gibson’s achievements not only showcased her extraordinary talent but also opened doors for future generations of minority athletes.

By featuring Ida B. Wells and Althea Gibson on quarters, the U.S. Mint celebrated their legacies and contributions to the ongoing struggle for civil rights and equality. The coins served as a reminder of the importance of acknowledging and preserving the stories of strong, resilient women who have shaped the nation’s history.
