Black Maternal Health Week is annually recognized from April 11-17 to raise awareness to the disparities black women face before, during, and after pregnancy as patients of the U.S healthcare system.
April is National Minority Health Month, so we wanted to make sure that we close out the month educating you all on some little known facts about Black women and the disparities between us and women of other ethnicities in relation to childbirth.
Did you know that…
•Black women are three to four times more likely to experience a pregnancy-related death than white women
•The preeclampsia rate is 60 percent higher in black women than in white women
•Only 4% of black women receive treatment for postpartum depression compared to 8% of white women
…it makes you wonder why, right?
The @BlackMamasMatter Alliance (the founders of Black Maternal Health Week) created the initiative to advance Black maternal health, rights, and access.
In addition to the founding of BMHW, the Black Mamas Matter Alliance host fundraisers, initiatives to support research, as well as an annual BMHW Walk to bring awareness to the cause and their initiatives.
We know the fight for Black maternal rights, equality, and justice is far from over, but with the dedication to spreading awareness, educating our communities, and demanding policy change, we will protect Black mothers and their families.
Do you have a birth story that other Black women can learn from? Email us at AllNewsBlackWomen@Gmail.Com so that we can share it with the world! #BWLM💕
