Jackson, Mississippi Republican lawmakers recently approved a plan to create an unelected court system that would oversee certain cases in the state. The move has been met with criticism from activists and legal experts who say it circumvents the democratic process and undermines the rule of law.

Under the new plan, appointed judges would oversee cases that involve important issues such as property tax disputes, zoning laws and some criminal cases. The judges would be appointed by Republican politicians and would not be subject to re-election, effectively allowing the GOP to maintain control of the courts for the foreseeable future.

Opponents of the plan argue that an independent judiciary is a cornerstone of democracy and should not be controlled by politicians. They also point out that it is unconstitutional to create a court system that does not adhere to the principles of democratic elections and accountability.

Proponents of the plan, however, claim that it will make the judiciary more efficient, reduce costs and ensure that cases are handled in a timely manner.

The creation of this new court system is just one example of the growing politicization of the judiciary in the United States. As political polarization continues to increase, it is likely that we will see more attempts to undermine the independence of the judiciary in the years to come.
