In developing news, D.C.‘s plans to make Metrobus rides free starting Summer 2023 under new legislation introduced by the City Council; as a restructure to a previous bill introduced by Ward 6’s Charles Allen (it outlined D.C. residents would receive a $100 monthly subsidy for metro transit).
The new plans mean all Metrobus rides that start in the District, would be cost-free, adding overnight service to 12 major bus lines in addition to a monthly stipend for Metrorail, being put in the works. The legislation would also create a $10 million improvement fund for bus lanes and shelters!
As WMATA tries to draw riders back to the system, council members say the bill would make routes/buses faster and more efficient, and the transit system more equitable for low-income riders, as well as benefitting those who work 2ND and 3rd shifts and depend on public transit.
The first vote on the legislation is on Dec. 6 and the final vote is expected on Dec. 20. Although D.C. isn’t the first or only city to implement programs of its likeness but they WOULD be the first to make the change, permanent. Per the city’s Budget Director, One in Threw D.C. residents commutes via public transit, and 68% of bus riders have household incomes below $50,000
Word on the streets is, the bill is likely to pass due to several council members voicing approval.
