In Wilmington, NC, the City Council has voted 5-2 to remove the “Black Lives Do Matter: End Racism Now” sign Downtown. Members, Kevin Spears and Clifford Barnett were the only ones to vote against taking it down.
Other council members voiced concerns about precedents being set for government speech and groups being able to use the sign as an example to support messages of their own. Spears said there haven’t been any inquiries from anyone looking to place a sign in that space.
“There is work to be done in Wilmington,” said Spears. “We have signed up to do the work, that’s what that means.” Keep in mind, there is no actual reason the mural is being removed. Proposals weren’t plentiful when it came to where it would be placed but
The deadline for removal is December 27th, 2022.
Family, what are y’all’s thoughts ? #BWLM💕
