WNBA champion and 2-time Olympic gold medalist Brittney Griner pleaded guilty to drug charges in a Russian court on Thursday. She could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
According to an interpreter, Griner said that she had been packing in haste and unintentionally packed a vape pen and cannabis oil canisters.
As we have previously reported, Griner pleaded to #PresidentBiden to get her out of jail. “I realize you are dealing with so much, but please don’t forget about me and the other detainees,” Griner said via statement from her representatives ahead of the Fourth of July holiday. “Please do all you can to bring us home.”
Back in May, the U.S. State Department had classified Brittney Griner as being “wrongfully detained” in Russia following her March arrest.
“The welfare and safety of U.S. citizens abroad is among the highest priorities of the U.S government,” the State Department said. “The Department of State has determined that the Russian Federation has wrongfully detained U.S. citizen Brittney Griner. The U.S. government said it will “continue to undertake efforts to provide appropriate support to Ms. Griner.”
