Emmy-nominated actress, documentary film producer, and equal rights advocate @LaverneCox is being honored by Barbie for her 50th birthday with a doll made in her image, making this Mattel’s first transgender Barbie!
“It’s been a dream for years to work with Barbie to create my doll,” Cox says. “I can’t wait for fans to find my doll on shelves and have the opportunity to add a Barbie doll modeled after a transgender person to their collection. I hope people can look at this Barbie and dream big as I have in my career. The space of dreaming and manifesting is such a powerful source and leads you to achieve more than what you originally thought was possible.”

Barbie and Laverne collaborated to create a doll that properly reflects her appearance and style through detailed research of the actress’s various looks including her make-up and hairstyles. Laverne gave feedback to capture her stamp of approval on every inch of her doll to have a great collaboration, complete with satisfaction from both Barbie and Laverne on the finished product.
In addition to having a doll created in her likeness, Barbie also donated to #TransFamilySOS. “We will be donating $25K to Trans Family Support Services. This nonprofit is close to Laverne’s heart and aims to create a more gender-affirming and accepting community.”
Mattel hopes that fans can appreciate this doll and celebrate Ms. Cox’s remarkable accomplishments in the film industry as she inspires people to be true to themselves and, like her, stand in their truth and for what they believe.
