We truly are trendsetters. We are not minorities but we have been minoritized, so it comes as little surprise that a conference aiming to put Black women at the forefront of the cannabis industry was held in #NewYorkCity.
New York state’s #BlackExpo, #AfricanAmericanCulturalCenter, #NYCBlackWomensPoliticalClub and roughly a dozen other cultural and health organizations hosted the event to openly discuss the future of the “budding” new business in New York and how Black women need to be at the forefront.
Last month, the #OfficeofCannabisManagement made the announcement that the first group of individuals to get licenses for the dispensaries, will be those who ended up with a conviction.
“We are here to talk about Black women owning and being a part of cannabis, because the cannabis industry – we really need to be stakeholders. Because we’ve been the ones most impacted by the War on Drugs,” says Assemblywoman #TaylorDarling ( @IAmTaylorDarling ).
Another organizer said, I think it’s important to remember that when we’re talking about cannabis we still remember that there are people incarcerated for marijuana usage, and if those folks aren’t also free as we’re talking about financial infrastructure, we’re talking about banking and we’re talking about those things, we have to remember those folks who were incarcerated because of the War on Drugs.”
Now for anyone who’s been around for more than two decades, we’ve seen our fair share of discrimination and targeting based on race come out of New York. This is a breath of fresh air, especially for something that could federally be legal before the year comes to an end.
