Did you know that as insane as it sounds, no player from a historically Black college or university has been drafted into the #WNBA since 2002? For the first time in years, this past Monday night, that finally changed.
#AmeshyaWilliamsHolliday, a senior center out of #JacksonStateUniversity, was selected in the third round, 25th overall, by the #IndianaFever, making her the first #HBCU player to be drafted into the WNBA in 20 years.
Williams-Holliday told @CNN, “It’s an honor, a dream come true, and a. blessing to be able to be a part of history and to be able to open doors for our HBCU community.” Also, “Being a trailblazer feels amazing, but there is so much more to accomplish.”
Ameshya ( @_meshya4 ) has worked very hard and proved that you could make a change with hard work and dedication to your craft.
“I’m very grateful for this opportunity to continue my career on the next level and, most importantly, to continue to be a great example for my son Jace and my younger siblings and for the kids in my community,” she continued. “I want every HBCU athlete to never lose hope and to know anything is possible.”
In the 26 years since the WNBA’s founding, only five players from an HBCU have ever been drafted into the league. Ameshya has proven that HBCU athletes can hold themselves to a standard, compete with other top universities, and hold their own; she is the first draft in years, and we congratulate her.
