A New Era of Leadership at Concessions International
Nikki Tinsley Harland has been named the new CEO of Concessions International (CI), one of the largest Black-owned airport concessionaires in the United States. She officially takes on the role October 6, marking a major leadership transition at the $120 million company.
She follows in the footsteps of Donata Russell Ross, who will retire after 12 years as CEO and more than four decades with the company. Ross grew CI into a powerhouse with 1,100 employees and nearly 40 locations across eight airports.
“This is more than just a leadership change,” the company said. “It is about building on a strong legacy and preparing CI for its next stage of growth.”
Donata Russell Ross’ Lasting Legacy
Ross transformed CI during her tenure, expanding its airport presence and bringing in nationally recognized brands. She also championed women and minority business participation, leaving an imprint that goes beyond financial success.
Under her leadership, CI became a trusted name in the travel retail and dining industry. Today, the company manages more than 30 national, regional, and proprietary brands in airports across the country.
Ross will remain involved as board chair of H.J. Russell & Co. and will support Harland through the transition, expected to be complete by early 2026.
Why Nikki Tinsley Harland Was Chosen
Harland brings more than a decade of executive experience in travel retail. She most recently served as Chief Operating Officer at Paradies Lagardère, an Atlanta-based airport concessionaire. Known for her ability to foster innovation and drive growth, she has built a reputation as a leader with integrity.
The CEO search committee, led by Russell Ross’ brothers Michael and H. Jerome Russell, highlighted Harland’s Atlanta roots, industry knowledge, and proven track record. “She is the ideal person to lead CI into the future,” Ross said in a statement.
Harland herself expressed excitement for the role: “I am honored to join Concessions International as CEO and build upon the incredible foundation and legacy established by those who came before me, especially Donata, who has been a role model for so many of us.”
The Power of Family and Legacy in Business
Concessions International’s story is deeply tied to the Russell family, one of Atlanta’s most prominent Black business families. The company was founded 46 years ago by Herman J. Russell, Felker W. Ward Jr., and Jesse Hill Jr. Russell later acquired full ownership, making CI a family-owned enterprise.
Today, CI operates under the broader umbrella of H.J. Russell & Co., founded by Herman J. Russell in 1952. That company has become one of the nation’s largest Black-owned construction firms and continues to shape business in Atlanta and beyond.
Harland now joins this legacy, stepping into a role that blends tradition, innovation, and community impact.

Harland is expected to continue CI’s expansion while navigating challenges facing the airport concessions industry. With travel trends shifting and competition increasing, her focus on innovation and growth will be crucial.
CI’s leadership believes her approach will position the company for the future. “She is ready to take CI to the next level,” the search committee noted.
As she prepares to take the helm, Harland represents both continuity and change. She steps into history as a Black woman CEO leading a multimillion-dollar enterprise while carrying forward a legacy built on resilience, family, and excellence.
