Zoë Kravitz shines in new role as EMT Yvonne
Zoë Kravitz takes on a powerful role in Darren Aronofsky’s latest film, Caught Stealing, which hits theaters on August 29. She plays Yvonne, an EMT who becomes a stabilizing force in the chaotic world of Hank Thompson, portrayed by Austin Butler. The film is adapted from Charlie Huston’s 2004 novel and is being distributed by Sony Pictures.
Yvonne is not just a love interest. She brings both care and independence, adding depth to Aronofsky’s dark character study. “There is a caring kind of maternal energy to Yvonne,” Kravitz explained. “She takes care of people but can also walk away at any time.”
A story rooted in New York’s grit and culture
Caught Stealing unfolds in New York during the 1990s, a time of raw energy and survival. Aronofsky captures the city’s spirit by weaving characters that mirror the boroughs’ unique identities. From Manhattan’s over-saturation to Brooklyn’s individuality, the story moves through neighborhoods as far as Brighton Beach.
“Living in New York is walking around and seeing these glimpses of life,” Kravitz said. “You see a couple fighting on the street, someone dancing nearby—so many people and so many contrasts in one space.”
Zoë Kravitz brings balance to strength and vulnerability
Kravitz admits she often gravitates toward strong and independent characters, but Yvonne challenged her to also highlight softness. She described finding this balance as both rewarding and demanding. “Personally, I am a very independent person, so I am drawn toward characters that feel that way. But it can be more difficult to find the softness and the vulnerability within.”
Her portrayal of Yvonne resonates with Aronofsky’s exploration of flawed humanity. Yvonne’s strength and care make Hank’s struggles more human and the film’s tragic turns even more striking.
Onscreen chemistry with Austin Butler
The chemistry between Kravitz and Austin Butler is one of the film’s emotional anchors. Cinematographer Matthew Libatique brings their complicated relationship to life with close, intimate shots. Their bond adds emotional weight to Hank’s journey, as he tries to survive mobsters, addiction, and a crumbling life.
The supporting cast includes Bad Bunny as a drug lord named Colorado and Regina King as a crooked New York cop. Each character represents a slice of the city’s intensity and its impact on Hank’s desperate fight for survival.
Learning from Darren Aronofsky’s directing process
For Kravitz, Caught Stealing was more than just acting—it was a chance to learn. After directing her debut film Blink Twice in 2024, she approached her role with new perspective. Watching Aronofsky’s directing style gave her lessons in storytelling beyond performance.
“I was really focused on Yvonne’s purpose in this story,” she explained. “Filming ended up being liberating because I was paying attention to Darren as a director and learning, rather than just focusing on myself as an actor.”
Thriving as actress and director in New York
Kravitz continues to grow as both performer and filmmaker. Living in Brooklyn, she draws constant inspiration from the city’s energy, diversity, and contradictions. That vibrancy influences both her acting choices and her directorial ambitions.
“Charlie and Darren really know New York City,” Kravitz said. “And as someone who’s lived here for a long time—you can tell right away when someone knows what they’re talking about.”
With Caught Stealing, Zoë Kravitz proves she can carry emotional weight on screen while sharpening her creative eye behind the camera.
