Sophie L. Gibson Takes Leadership Role at Saint Augustine’s

Saint Augustine’s University has appointed Sophie L. Gibson as the new chair of its Board of Trustees. She is the first Black woman to hold this position at the historic institution. Gibson, a business leader from Atlanta, takes over from Brian A. Boulware, who led the Board since 2019.

Boulware described his time as chair as a period of challenge and transformation. He expressed confidence in Gibson’s ability to guide the university through its next phase. “I am proud of the work we have accomplished together and confident in the leadership of Chair Gibson and the Board to guide SAU into a bright future,” he said.

Women Now Lead the Top Roles on the Board

The appointment carries added significance as both the chair and vice chair roles are now held by women. V. Lynette Mitchell, a 1989 graduate of the university, will serve as vice chair. Together, Gibson and Mitchell mark a new chapter in the governance of Saint Augustine’s.

Gibson highlighted her gratitude for those who led before her. “As we move into this new chapter, we honor their contributions while embracing a bold, strategic path forward that will strengthen our impact for generations to come,” she said. Mitchell echoed her optimism, calling the moment the beginning of “an exciting new era for SAU.”

Federal Injunction Protects Accreditation for the Fall Semester

Earlier this month, Saint Augustine’s secured a crucial victory in its battle to maintain accreditation. A federal injunction allows the school to keep its status while it challenges an earlier ruling by its accrediting body. This decision ensures that students can continue their education without disruption.

Marcus H. Burgess, the interim president, described the ruling as a win for students and supporters. “Thanks to our supporters, we will open our (virtual) doors on Sept. 2 as an accredited institution, just as we promised,” he stated. He also emphasized the school’s determination to protect its mission and students.

Fundraising Campaign Supports Stability and Growth

The university is also pushing forward with its “Believe in SAU: A Falcon Is Not an Ordinary Bird” campaign. Donations from the initiative will support daily operations and legal costs tied to the accreditation case. Alumni and friends of the university have shown strong support through contributions.

Gibson noted that this collective effort reflects the strength of the Falcon community. “This injunction is not just a legal reprieve; it is a testament to the power of the Falcon community,” she said. “It allows us to continue educating our students without interruption as we vigorously defend SAU’s future in court, and it shows that we soar higher when we soar together.”

Looking Ahead Under New Leadership

With new leadership and legal relief in place, Saint Augustine’s aims to stabilize its operations. The university now looks to move forward with strategic planning, guided by Gibson and Mitchell. Leaders stress that the goal is not only to survive the accreditation challenge but also to strengthen the institution’s long-term impact.

The combination of fresh governance, strong community backing, and a clear strategy positions Saint Augustine’s for renewal. The Board’s direction under Gibson marks both a milestone in representation and a crucial turning point for the university’s future.
