Michelle Obama Opens Up About Skipping Trump’s Second Inauguration
Michelle Obama has finally addressed why she didn’t attend the 2025 inauguration of former President Donald Trump. While her husband, Barack Obama, went alone, many speculated something was wrong in their marriage.
But Michelle says the reason was deeply personal. On her podcast IMO With Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson, she explained that skipping the event was a powerful act of self-respect.
“It took everything in my power to not do the thing that was perceived as right, but do what was right for me,” she said.
Choosing Herself Over Expectations
Michelle Obama shared that the decision was tough. People assumed the worst when she said no to attending a major political event. But she insisted it had nothing to do with her relationship.
Instead, it had everything to do with reclaiming her space. “It started with not having anything to wear,” she said, adding that she didn’t even want her team to prepare a dress. That would have made it too easy to give in.
“It’s so easy to just say, let me do the right thing,” Michelle noted. “But saying no is a muscle you have to build.”
Teaching Young Girls the Power of Saying No
The former First Lady spoke passionately about setting a new standard for young women. She wants girls to learn the value of saying no early, rather than struggling with it in adulthood.
“I want our daughters… to start practicing different strategies for saying no,” she said. She believes building this skill is just as important as academic or professional success.
Michelle pointed out that for many women, especially Black women, people-pleasing is deeply ingrained. She hopes her choice shows others that it’s okay to prioritize their own peace.
Therapy Helped Her Reclaim Her Voice
Michelle also shared that therapy has played a major role in her journey. The pressure of being First Lady came with constant judgment and unrealistic standards.
During the podcast, she admitted she’s still learning to feel “good enough.” The therapy process is helping her heal after years of putting others first.
“We made it through. We got out alive,” she said about the White House years. “But what happened to me?”
No Plans for Politics, Only Growth
Despite public interest, Michelle Obama remains firm on not entering politics. She’s seen how toxic that space can be, especially for Black leaders.
Instead, she’s focused on inner growth, personal strength, and showing up for herself. Her story reminds Black women everywhere that saying no is not selfish—it’s powerful.
