Rihanna’s Clara Lionel Foundation (CLF) is expanding its reach and changing the landscape of global philanthropy. Known for her incredible music career and Fenty empire, Rihanna is now making headlines for her unwavering commitment to charitable work. The foundation, named after her grandparents, is setting a new standard by focusing on a wide range of causes that impact communities across the world.

Major COVID Relief Efforts and Future Plans

The Clara Lionel Foundation made a significant impact in 2020 by donating over $33 million in COVID-19 relief efforts. This impressive contribution shows Rihanna’s commitment to supporting global health initiatives. The foundation continues to allocate funds for pressing issues, including climate change and empowering women in East Africa, the Caribbean, and the U.S. South.

In the coming years, CLF is aiming to expand its global impact with a renewed focus on the intersection of climate solutions and women’s entrepreneurship. The foundation’s vision is clear: create lasting change by uplifting communities in need while empowering women to lead the way.

A New Team of Diverse Leaders

One of the most exciting developments at CLF is the addition of a dynamic new team of Black and Brown women who are driving the foundation’s mission. Dr. Rosanna Saladin-Subero leads the Women’s Entrepreneurship team, and Amina Doherty is heading up Programs and Impact. Together, they are shaping the foundation’s future, ensuring it reaches new heights and supports a wide range of causes.

As the foundation grows, the five pillars guiding its work include Climate Solutions, Arts and Culture, Health Access and Equity, Future Generations, and Women’s Entrepreneurship. The leadership team is passionate about creating opportunities for future generations and ensuring equitable access to resources for marginalized communities.

Rihanna’s Personal Connection to Philanthropy

Rihanna’s personal journey has greatly influenced the direction of the Clara Lionel Foundation. Established in 2012, the foundation was born out of a deep sense of loss following the death of Rihanna’s beloved grandmother, Clara. In her honor, Rihanna made a generous donation of modern radiotherapy equipment to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Barbados, where her grandmother received care.

The foundation continues to carry forward Rihanna’s spirit of generosity and love for her community. Executive Director, Jessie Schutt-Aine, describes the organization as an extension of Rihanna’s multifaceted personality. “Our founder is a woman from a small island nation who’s got global reach. She’s an entrepreneur. She’s a mom. She’s a creative,” said Schutt-Aine. This statement captures the essence of the foundation, reflecting Rihanna’s values in every aspect of its work.

Partnerships and Artistic Contributions

The Clara Lionel Foundation has also formed partnerships with other major organizations, including The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, to support artist-led initiatives. One of the notable projects funded is Operation Triple Threat, a performance arts program that offers free social services to students. Thanks to CLF’s support, the program has been able to acquire a new space equipped with sound equipment and a dance floor, providing young artists with valuable resources to further their craft.

Looking Ahead: CLF’s Global Vision

Rihanna’s ultimate goal is for the Clara Lionel Foundation to become a global leader in philanthropy. “Today, we have global reach, but that notion of love for community and for our roots runs deep in the DNA of the foundation,” Rihanna shared. This vision is at the heart of the foundation’s ongoing efforts to empower individuals and communities around the world.
