In a historic moment for both the Detroit Athletic Club (DAC) and the city of Detroit itself, Kelly Major Green has made an indelible mark as the first Black woman to be appointed to the DAC’s Board of Directors. Her appointment is more than a milestone for the prestigious institution; it represents a broader shift towards inclusion, representation, and empowerment. Kelly Major Green’s leadership is grounded in a profound love for Detroit, a deep commitment to community, and an unshakable belief in breaking barriers—not for the applause, but for the legacy she continues to build.

Kelly Major Green: A Proud Detroiter Leading with Purpose

Raised in Detroit, Green’s love for her city runs deep. Her roots in the 313 area code have shaped her life and mission. As a lifelong resident, she views her role as both a responsibility and an honor. “I’m a Detroiter through and through. I was born and raised in Detroit. I went away to go to school, lived in Chicago for a while, and then came back home to be closer to my parents,” Green shares.

Green’s personal commitment to Detroit is evident in the choices she and her husband, John Green Jr., have made. Despite not having children, the couple resides in the city to support its growth, particularly through the tax system that benefits public schools. “We feel like a part of our commitment here is to support that,” Green says, emphasizing their dedication to the community’s future.

A Career Built on Excellence and Purpose

Kelly Major Green’s professional achievements are nothing short of impressive. With an electrical engineering degree from the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from Northwestern University, she has built a career rooted in strategic leadership and financial expertise. Currently serving as an Institutional Consulting Director at Greystone Consulting, a division of Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, Green’s focus is on wealth management that fosters access and empowerment, particularly for those historically shut out of such opportunities.

But it’s not just her resume that makes her stand out—it’s her values. Green is a firm believer that health is wealth, and she practices what she preaches. “My focus is about making sure everyone, especially women of color, has a chance to take their place at the table,” Green explains.

Breaking Barriers: More Than Just a Title

Green’s election to the DAC board is historic, not because it is simply the first of its kind, but because it opens doors for others to follow. While Kelly is the first Black woman to serve on the DAC board, she acknowledges the contributions of those who came before her, like Linda Forte, who ran for the board in the past. “I know Linda paved the way along with other board members,” Green reflects.

Green’s rise to this position is deeply personal. It represents the culmination of years of hard work, leadership, and dedication to her community. “I believe I’m correct in saying there’s only one other Black woman who ran for the board—Linda Forte, who made history as well,” she says, recognizing the importance of collective progress.

A Legacy of Leadership and Inspiration

As a role model, Kelly Major Green is driven by a profound sense of duty to uplift others. “People came to me and said, ‘My grandmother used to work in the laundry at the ‘XYZ’ club, and how proud they would have been to see me in this role.’ My hope is to inspire other young women, women of color, African-American women, and just be a role model—whether I’m actively coaching that or just by their observance of me—that they can be inspired to know that anything is possible for them,” Green shares.

Her story is not just about one woman’s achievement—it’s about the ripple effect that comes from breaking barriers and creating spaces for future leaders. For Green, this board seat isn’t just a personal victory; it’s a collective win for the community. “I’m building on a foundation that allows others to walk through doors with less resistance and more support,” she states.

Moving History Forward: A Symbol of Change

Kelly Major Green’s appointment to the Detroit Athletic Club’s board is more than just a moment in time. It’s a symbol of the ongoing evolution of Detroit itself—a city defined by resilience, pride, and transformation. For Green, this role is not about seeking validation, but about creating an environment where excellence meets opportunity. “This board seat is just the recognition catching up,” she says.

Green’s leadership shows us that true progress isn’t just about reaching a personal milestone—it’s about making sure the path is clearer for those who follow. The presence of women like Kelly Major Green on influential boards and in powerful roles is reshaping the future, brick by brick, seat by seat.
