The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) has secured a transformative $25 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. This game-changing investment is set to enhance innovation, research, and student success across Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the United States.
$25 Million to Empower HBCU Growth and Sustainability
The $25 million grant will support TMCF’s new initiative, “Project HBCU Capacity Building: Maximizing HBCU Performance Through Investments in Research, Operations, and Innovation.” This ambitious project is designed to address critical challenges HBCUs face, such as outdated infrastructure, lack of student resources, and limited research opportunities.
“This monumental grant will enable the Thurgood Marshall College Fund to better serve its campuses and students, providing opportunities for funding to implement innovative projects that address unique challenges,” said Dr. Harry L. Williams, President and CEO of TMCF.
The initiative will focus on boosting institutional capacities by improving administrative systems, offering professional development, and creating opportunities for collaboration between HBCUs.
Building a Future of Innovation Through Strategic Investments
TMCF’s new project will roll out three core strategies to enhance HBCU performance. First, it will upgrade administrative systems and streamline data collection processes. This step aims to improve operational efficiency and foster data-driven decision-making.
Second, the project will focus on professional development for HBCU staff. Workshops and training sessions will empower educators and administrators with the tools they need to support student success effectively.
Finally, member schools will have access to grants and technical assistance to invest in faculty research, advanced technology, and initiatives to improve student retention. These investments will prepare HBCUs for long-term growth and stability.
Lilly Endowment’s Commitment to Supporting HBCUs
Lilly Endowment Inc., founded by the creators of Eli Lilly and Company, expressed its excitement about supporting TMCF and its member institutions. Ted Maple, Vice President for Education at Lilly Endowment, highlighted the organization’s enthusiasm for the initiative.
“Thurgood Marshall College Fund provides an impressive array of services and support to its member institutions to help their students thrive in college and achieve their education and career goals,” Maple said. “We are pleased to support efforts to enhance TMCF’s capacity and assist HBCUs in carrying out their important missions.”
This partnership reinforces Lilly Endowment’s longstanding dedication to education and innovation.
Far-Reaching Impact Beyond Member Schools
Established in 1987, TMCF represents 54 member schools, including 42 four-year HBCUs. While the grant will initially focus on a select group of institutions, the broader HBCU community is set to benefit.
“Over five years, we anticipate substantial improvements in institutional capacity outcomes across participating HBCUs,” Dr. Williams stated. “The impact will extend far beyond those institutions, fostering collaborative learning to increase operational excellence and institutional capacity for the greater HBCU community.”
By enhancing collaboration and resource-sharing among HBCUs, TMCF’s initiative aims to set a new standard for educational excellence.
Transforming the Future of Black Higher Education
This historic $25 million grant marks a significant step forward in strengthening the role of HBCUs in higher education. With TMCF’s vision and Lilly Endowment’s support, the future looks brighter for these institutions and their students.
