The Black Excellence Brunch continues to celebrate and honor individuals who uplift Black communities. This year, Beverly Bond and Cicely Gay were recognized for their incredible work and dedication to empowering Black culture and addressing critical issues affecting Black people.
Honoring Two Trailblazers: Beverly Bond and Cicely Gay
Beverly Bond, known for her impactful career as a celebrity DJ and TV producer, founded the BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Awards in 2006. The event celebrates the excellence and achievements of Black women across various fields, including music, art, film, and technology. Bond’s vision was to showcase the dynamism of Black women and the cultural richness they bring.
After accepting her award, Bond expressed gratitude for the recognition and shared how she first met Trell Thomas, the founder of The Black Excellence Brunch. “It is a profound honor to stand here,” Bond said, thanking Thomas for his dedication to the community and for creating a space that uplifts and connects people.
Cicely Gay: Champion for Social Justice
Cicely Gay has been an activist and community advocate for over 20 years. In July, she became the board chairwoman for the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation. Gay’s tireless work highlights her commitment to social justice and empowering Black communities. After receiving her recognition at the brunch, she stood beside Bond and shared a heartfelt message with the audience.
“Take a moment to get to know our work but most importantly, get to know our heart,” Gay said to the attendees. She spoke passionately about the foundation’s mission to make a lasting impact and uplift those who need it most.
The Legacy of BLACK GIRLS ROCK! and Black Lives Matter
Bond’s BLACK GIRLS ROCK! movement has become a symbol of pride and empowerment. It celebrates Black women’s contributions and encourages younger generations to embrace their culture and identity. Over the years, the BLACK GIRLS ROCK! brand has grown into a widely respected initiative, amplifying Black voices and inspiring countless women.
Meanwhile, Gay continues her work with Black Lives Matter to expand its influence as a powerful philanthropic organization. “Black Lives Matter now and always and in all ways,” Gay emphasized, showcasing her passion for the movement and her drive to bring meaningful change.
An Event Full of Inspiration
The Black Excellence Brunch, known for its mix of inspiration and celebration, once again created a space where guests could feel seen and celebrated. As the event unfolded, attendees shared heartfelt stories, networked, and found support in the unity of their shared experiences. The event’s host, Trell Thomas, took a moment to reflect on why he began this initiative.
“I wanted to extend that joy to my friends,” Thomas said, recalling the warmth of his mother’s Sunday dinners. He described the brunch as a place where people come together to honor each other’s hard work and contributions. “So we’re celebrating all of you, every single person is celebrating,” he added.
Monica’s Surprise Appearance
R&B singer Monica made a surprise appearance at the brunch, sharing her thoughts on purpose and faith. The “So Gone” singer spoke about the power of believing in oneself, even when challenges arise. “My mom used to always talk about faith being the size of a mustard seed, but at the same time, you can’t see it. So, sometimes when it’s not tangible, you don’t understand this power,” Monica shared.
