Julie Mehretu, a world-renowned Ethiopian-American artist, has brought her latest masterpiece to the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. The stunning work, titled “Uprising of the Sun,” is an 83-foot-tall, 25-foot-wide glass installation now featured on the north facade of the Museum Building. This monumental piece of art is already inspiring visitors with its powerful message of history, hope, and change.

A Monumental Work Reflecting on Obama’s Legacy

Inspired by President Obama’s speech at the 50th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery marches, Julie Mehretu’s “Uprising of the Sun” uses abstract art to capture the essence of Obama’s presidency. The artwork consists of 35 brightly colored, hand-painted glass panels. It reflects the historical significance of Obama’s leadership and the struggles for civil rights.

Mehretu’s artistic vision is to inspire visitors who come to the Obama Presidential Center, encouraging them to connect with the themes of history and progress. “I wanted to honor Chicago’s history and President Obama’s legacy by telling a story about how change happens,” Mehretu explained. This connection to history is deeply personal for Mehretu, whose own life has been shaped by both American and Ethiopian cultural influences.

The Inspiration Behind “Uprising of the Sun”

Julie Mehretu, known for her bold and abstract art, views her work as a reflection of contemporary social behavior and history. The daughter of an Ethiopian father and an American mother, Mehretu’s multicultural background has given her a unique perspective on the power of public spaces and art.

Her collaboration with Franz Mayer Studio allowed her to bring this vision to life using a variety of techniques, including freehand airbrushing, ceramic melting colors, and tape masking. This is Mehretu’s first-ever glass work, and it is already being hailed as a major contribution to public art. “I hope it serves as an invitation to every visitor that they are welcome to be a part of the Center’s mission to make an impact and work towards a better future,” Mehretu said.

Transforming the Obama Presidential Center Through Art

The Obama Presidential Center is not just a museum; it’s a space for inspiration and connection. “Uprising of the Sun” is one of the first major art installations to be unveiled, but it’s only the beginning. When completed in 2026, the Center will feature over 20 original works of art, both indoors and outdoors, free for the public to enjoy.

President Obama expressed his excitement about Mehretu’s contribution, saying, “For her to be a part of what we hope will be a transformative institution that will bring so many different people and ideas together is a wonderful opportunity for us.” The Center aims to serve as a beacon for those who want to reflect on history while being inspired to create change in their communities.

Mehretu’s Lasting Impact on Art and Society

Julie Mehretu is no stranger to accolades. She has received numerous awards, including a MacArthur Fellowship and the US Department of State’s Medal of Arts Award. Her artwork has been exhibited worldwide, and she’s been recognized by TIME magazine as one of the 100 most influential people of the year in 2020. Mehretu’s vision of art as a powerful force for social change has made her an icon in the art world.

Now, with her latest work gracing the walls of the Obama Presidential Center, Mehretu continues to leave an indelible mark on the world. Through her art, she reminds us that history is not something to be forgotten but something to be lived and re-imagined in our daily lives. Her work at the Obama Center is just one more way she continues to inspire future generations.
