Maya Moore, a celebrated legend of the Minnesota Lynx, was honored in a heartwarming ceremony where her number 23 jersey was retired. The special moment took place after a game against Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever at Target Arena.

Moore, now part of an elite group, joins Lindsay Whalen, Sylvia Fowles, Rebekkah Brunson, and Seimone Augustus, whose jerseys also hang in the arena’s rafters.

A Night Filled with Emotions and Celebrations

In front of a raucous crowd of 19,023, Moore received a warm tribute. The night was made even more memorable with the presentation of gold pairs of her signature Jordan Brand shoes and a letterman-style jacket. Moore became the first female athlete signed by Jordan Brand in her rookie season back in 2011.

Emotional and reflective, Moore shared her thoughts with the audience. “My life is an example of what it looks like when we love a little girl well,” she said. “I tried to bring joy and life every day, as I’ve been a recipient of both.”

Moore’s Impact Beyond Basketball

Moore’s legacy extends beyond her incredible basketball career. She took a hiatus from the WNBA to focus on helping her now-husband, Jonathan Irons, who was wrongfully imprisoned. After his release in 2020, Moore dedicated herself to her family and social justice, leaving basketball at the peak of her career.

The impact of Moore’s activism and personal journey was felt deeply, especially by rising stars like Caitlin Clark. Clark spoke about Moore’s influence, saying, “Maya was the person for me growing up. It’s incredible to play in the same arena she did and see her legacy honored.”

Moore’s Legacy Lives On Through Current Stars

Moore’s influence continues to inspire current players. Napheesa Collier, a Lynx superstar who also attended UConn, reflects Moore’s impact on the game. Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve noted, “Maya Moore’s legacy is evident in Napheesa Collier’s success. Moore’s presence inspired a generation of players.”

Celebrating a Trailblazer

The retirement of Maya Moore’s jersey marks a significant milestone, celebrating not only her achievements on the court but also her profound impact off it. The Lynx’s tribute highlights Moore’s extraordinary contributions to basketball and her unwavering commitment to justice and family.
