Renowned filmmaker Tyler Perry has once again demonstrated his generosity. He’s stepping in to help George and Dorothy Williams, an elderly Atlanta couple scammed out of $60,000 by a fraudulent contractor.

Tyler Perry’s Generous Intervention

Perry’s act of kindness came after learning about the Williams’ plight. The couple had been left in a precarious situation when Steven Chastain, posing as a contractor for HomeSmart Services, disappeared with their money.

Dorothy Williams recounted Perry’s reassuring words:

“Calm down, take a deep breath, you don’t have to worry anymore. I’m going to pay for everything.”

Perry’s commitment goes beyond just covering the scammed amount. He’s pledged to pay for all necessary home repairs and the $100,000 loan the couple took out.

The Scam That Left the Williams Family Struggling

The Williams’ ordeal began when they urgently needed home renovations due to hazardous conditions. Chastain approached them, offering to complete the repairs for $147,000.

After the couple paid an initial $60,000, Chastain vanished. This left the Williams with an unfinished home and a substantial debt.

Their grandson, Caleb Franklin, detailed the situation on GoFundMe:

“In March of 2022, the representative claimed to have secured a city permit and requested the remaining 50% deposit of the project’s budget. However, work abruptly ceased the following day, with the crew citing a lack of necessary permits.”

Perry’s Comprehensive Support Plan

Perry’s assistance extends beyond financial aid. His team will work with Atlanta officials on permits and oversee the home’s construction.

This approach ensures the Williams family receives proper support throughout the renovation process. It also safeguards them from potential future scams.

A Pattern of Philanthropy

This isn’t Perry’s first act of generosity towards individuals in need. Recently, he promised to build a home for Josephine Wright, a 94-year-old woman from Hilton Head, South Carolina.

Despite Wright’s passing on January 7, Perry reaffirmed his commitment. He stated on social media:

“You have run your race and fought an incredible fight! Journey well, my dear lady. You have inspired me.”

The Wider Impact of Contractor Fraud

The Williams’ case highlights the vulnerability of homeowners, especially the elderly, to contractor fraud. Such scams can have devastating financial and emotional consequences.

Perry’s intervention not only helps the Williams family but also draws attention to this issue. It underscores the need for better consumer protection measures in the home improvement industry.
