Bridging Entrepreneurship and Racial Equity
Melissa Bradley, the founder and general partner of 1863 Ventures, has been recognized for her significant contributions in financially empowering Black founders and building a viable Black business ecosystem.
In 2016, Bradley launched 1863 Ventures, an investment firm dedicated to bridging entrepreneurship and racial equity, amplifying underserved entrepreneurs, and helping them achieve their goals.
Receiving the Prestigious John Carroll Award
Bradley’s remarkable efforts have been acknowledged with the prestigious John Carroll Award, presented during the 72nd Annual John Carroll Weekend at the Royal Dublin Society in Dublin, Ireland, on April 20, 2024.
The award recognizes alumni whose achievements and record of service exemplify the ideals and traditions of Georgetown University and its founder.
Fostering a Thriving Entrepreneurial Community
Bradley’s journey began in 2015 when she organized a conference and pitch competition to gauge interest among entrepreneurs of color. The overwhelming response led her to realize the need for support for scalable businesses aiming to become million-dollar companies and employ people.
“We found over 500 in 18 months. We found 545 companies doing $267 million dollars of business a year in D.C. creating 3,000 jobs. From there, we realized there was a real opportunity,” Bradley shared.
As a Professor of the Practice at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University, Bradley further demonstrates her commitment to supporting the closure of the racial wealth gap by educating the next generation of business leaders.
Empowering Entrepreneurs for Community Impact
Bradley’s vision extends beyond financial gains; she aims to create a lasting impact on communities. “I want to leave behind as many African American, Latino millionaires as possible,” she said.
“And not just because it’s about the money. But the reality is that the economy changes as politics change. And in a capitalist society, one of the ways that we’re guaranteed to have our footing is to have access to capital.”
A Ripple Effect of Empowerment
Bradley’s work has resonated deeply with entrepreneurs, who recognize the broader significance of their success. “There is not a single entrepreneur that doesn’t come through our program who doesn’t say I’m not doing this for me, I’m doing this for my community,” she shared.
Through 1863 Ventures, Melissa Bradley has created a powerful ripple effect, empowering Black founders, fostering a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem, and paving the way for a more equitable future in the business world.
