Fashion Icon Honored at V&A Museum
After an illustrious four-decade career, Naomi Campbell, one of the most recognizable models and influential Black women in the world, is receiving a momentous celebration of her enduring impact on fashion.
The Victoria and Albert Museum in London is launching “NAOMI: In Fashion,” an extensive exhibition showcasing memorable designer outfits and pivotal moments from Campbell’s trailblazing journey.
“I’m honored to be asked by the V&A to share my life in clothes with the world,” Campbell, 53, said in a statement.
A Retrospective of Iconic Looks
Produced in collaboration with Campbell herself, the exhibition will feature an awe-inspiring collection of approximately 100 looks and accessories from fashion’s biggest names, including Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Versace, Yves Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, and many more.
Highlights include Campbell’s iconic 1989 Thierry Mugler car-inspired corset made from plastic and metal, the bubble-gum pink Valentino gown and feather cape she wore at the 2019 Met Gala, and the staggeringly high Vivienne Westwood platform shoes that caused her famous 1993 catwalk fall.
Honoring a Trailblazer and Activist
Beyond showcasing Campbell’s unforgettable fashion moments, the exhibition will also celebrate her advocacy for equity in the industry and her support for emerging creative talents. A dedicated section will explore her personal and professional relationship with the late designer Azzedine Alaïa, who played a pivotal role in advancing her career.
“Naomi Campbell’s extraordinary career intersects with the best of high fashion. She is recognized worldwide as a supermodel, activist, philanthropist and creative collaborator, making her one of the most prolific and influential figures in contemporary culture,” said Sonnet Stanfill, senior curator of fashion at the V&A.
A Journey from Dancer to Supermodel
Born in London, Campbell’s journey began at the tender age of 8, when she started performing in music videos for artists like Bob Marley and Culture Club. Discovered by a model agent at 15, she quickly rose to prominence, gracing catwalks in Paris and Milan within two years and becoming the first Black model to appear on the cover of Vogue France in 1988.
With its comprehensive and immersive exploration of Campbell’s remarkable career, “NAOMI: In Fashion” promises to be a fitting tribute to one of fashion’s most iconic and influential figures, celebrating her enduring legacy and impact on the industry and beyond.
The exhibition will be open to the public from June 22 to April 2025 at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
